Catullus 51 is said to have been the first in the series of Lesbia poems. Catullus wrote his poems and epigrams of personal life during the late Roman Republic, and they survive in an anthology of more than a hundred items. Many are caustic, satirical, and erotic, often lampooning well-known characters of the day including Julius Caesar and his friends. The quite nice Poem 51, a partial translation of Sappho. Metre: Sapphic, of course.

Catullus 51, “Ille mi par,” is Catullus’ translation and adaptation of Sappho’s poem “φαίνεταί μοι” (Sappho 31 by the Lobel and Voigt numbering). After translating Catullus 51 in a Latin Lyric class, I became very interested in comparing the two poems and investigating how Catullus used Sappho’s framework to express his own desire and longing for Lesbia. Catullus 50 tells of a lively poetry writing session between Catullus and his friend Licinius Calvus, as well as lethargy and ennui Catullus feels afterward. It has a mocking tone which is apparent by the use of urbane language as well as hendecasyllabic meter. Each line has eleven poetic feet.
